Do you build dynamic data into your script parameters? I do - often concatinating strings of data with a unique seperator. I might grab from a portal row my record ID, creation date, modifier, and other values to pass on to a script. This custom function allows you to build custom strings of data separated by the character of your choice and then easily pull it out by providing the custom function with the starting position of your chosen separator. Use zero to grab the first set of characters. It grabs from left to right.
